This is perhaps one of my favourite species of dragonfly and it is also one of the easier species to photograph.
It can be an obliging subject, this particular example sat nicely on a reed stem basking in the July sunshine no more than six inches away from the lens.
This image has been compressed for the internet however it still preserves a high level of detail.
Owing to the close up nature of the image the depth of field has been compromised, however this appears to accentuate the amazing detail in the head and eyes. Depth of field at this range can just be a matter of a few millimetres at the very best.
A single centre point focusing setting was used to help capture the detail of head and eye region.
